Crawl space insulation in Manhattan KS - warmer floors, starting underneath

Cold floors and a high power bill often start below the house. We find what's going on down there first, then insulate it properly.

Cold floors and a crawl space you'd rather not think about usually go together. Crawl space insulation in Manhattan, KS goes on the crawl space walls or on the underside of the floor above, so the rooms over it get the protection they're missing. If the cold is coming through the outside walls instead, that's wall insulation.

Before we talk about walls or floor, I look for standing water and where it's coming from, because insulation in a wet crawl space does little good. I also check what's under the old insulation, since new material laid over a soaked or dirty layer just keeps the problem around.

The price turns mostly on the size of the space, whether water has to be dealt with first, which material goes in and how easy it is to get around down there. The schedule turns on that same water and on any permit. The estimate I do at your house gives you your own figure and the order I'd work in.

You'll see what I found and why each step comes when it does before anything goes in, so call (785) 236-2032 to set up a visit.

Where crawl space insulation goes

Every crawl space is built a little different, so I look at whether yours is vented or closed off, what's already down there and where air gets in before we pick a method.

  • Crawl space walls

When the crawl space is closed to outside air, we insulate the foundation walls so the space stays close to the temperature of the rooms above. Foam board or spray foam both work there.

  • Underside of the floor

In a vented crawl space, the insulation goes up between the floor joists under your rooms. We hold it tight to the floor so cold air can't slip in behind it.

  • Gaps where air leaks in

We close the gaps around pipes, wires and the wood along the top of the foundation first, because insulation can't stop a draft on its own. It's the same work our air sealing services cover.

Why homeowners call Sterling Manhattan Spray Foam Insulationfor the space under the floor

Working with us is slow and plain. I show you what I found down there, what comes first and why, and nobody pushes you to decide on the spot.

  • The owner looks at every job

I come out to look at every crawl space myself. Our own installers do the work, and I'm on site with them while they do it.

  • Trained on a municipal crew

I started this business in Manhattan in 2023, after learning insulation and weatherproofing on a city crew where every job got checked before it was signed off.

  • Licensed and insured in Manhattan

We're licensed and insured. In Manhattan, contractor and trade licenses come from the same city office that issues building permits.

  • Corners and edges done right

The corners and the rim along the top of the foundation get the same care as the middle, because those are the spots nobody looks at and where cold gets in.

  • Backed by our satisfaction guarantee

The work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee. I'd rather explain a step twice than leave you wondering what you paid for.

How a crawl space job runsfrom your call to the walkthrough

I keep it simple by telling you up front what I found and the order I'd do things in, so you know what you're paying for at each step.

  1. You call or send the form

Call (785) 236-2032 or send the form with what you know about the crawl space, and we'll set up a time for me to come out.

  2. I look it over myself

I go down and check for water, appliances and old insulation, then walk you through what I see and the order I'd do things in, with your estimate.

  3. Getting the space ready

Any water problem gets fixed first, an appliance check gets lined up if one's needed, and we sort out any permit with the right office before we start.

  4. The insulation goes in

Our own installers do the work with me on site, sealing the gaps first and then insulating the walls or floor we agreed on.

  5. We walk through it together

When we're done, I go over the finished crawl space with you, show you what went in and where, and answer anything still on your mind.

Crawl space questions we hear

How do I decide between insulating the crawl space walls or the floor above?

If your crawl space is closed to outside air, insulate the walls, because a closed crawl space is treated as part of the heated house. With rigid foam board on those walls, the floor above doesn't need insulation of its own. In a vented crawl space the insulation usually goes under the floor instead, and I'll tell you which you have once I've been down there.

Is open-cell or closed-cell spray foam better for a crawl space?

Closed-cell is usually the better pick in a crawl space, because this dense foam insulates better and slows moisture once it's more than two inches deep. Open-cell costs less, but it lets moisture through, and that's the wrong trait for the damp air under a house.

How much does crawl space insulation cost in Manhattan, KS?

Across the US, insulating a crawl space usually runs about $3 to $6 per square foot, and that's a national figure, not our price. Where yours lands depends on the size, the material and how much has to be fixed before insulation goes in. The estimate I do at your house gives you your own number.

Is it safe to seal a crawl space with a gas furnace or water heater in it?

It can be, as long as the appliance is tested for proper venting before and after, because sealing can sometimes send exhaust gases back into the house. ENERGY STAR suggests having a Home Performance Contractor do that test, and we plan for it whenever a gas or oil appliance sits down there. In a high radon area it also suggests a radon test and a radon system before sealing, and the Kansas health department says testing is the only way to know your level.

Does foam board in a crawl space need to be covered?

Usually yes, because most building codes require polystyrene and polyurethane foam boards inside a house to have a fire-rated covering. Crawl space work in Manhattan follows the city's adopted building codes, so a foam board job here includes that covering layer as part of the plan.

Can I insulate my crawl space myself?

You can, but ENERGY STAR rates sealing and insulating a basement as a moderate to difficult do-it-yourself project, and a crawl space is that same work on your back in a tight space. It also says the payoff can be substantial, so if you take it on, deal with any water first, for the reason above.
